patelyne: (good times)
Good news, bad news time…quick recap (with linkydoos to posts w/pics and such) for anyone who has no idea who Captain Jack Hawkness is:

We found a poor baby hawk that fell out of one of the trees in our yard. It took over our yard, and tried to ride my scooter

Captain Jack is officially named and turned over to the experts

We find Baby No Name and check up on Capt Hawkness

I know it has been a while since the last update, but I have a good excuse. Okay I don’t really have a good excuse, but I have a semi-acceptable excuse, or maybe an understandable excuse? … I’m emotionally fragile and didn’t want bad news. I noticed we hadn’t heard from the vet and have been sort of avoiding calling them myself. It was pointed out to me that the reason I hadn’t heard from them could be because the birds had both died and they didn’t want to tell me (sometimes the people around me are real rays of sunshine). I figured as long as I didn’t talk to the vet they couldn’t give me any bad news. Yes I realize this is stupid and whether or not I was informed wouldn’t really change what had or had not happened. In any case, the ‘to call or not to call’ decision was finally taken out of my hands when the county health department called and left a message saying we needed to contact them ASAP about the birds we turned in. When he got home my boyfriend called to see what was going on. Turns out the bird (they only knew about Jack), had tested positive for West Nile Virus and they were calling to warn us not to go outdoors without taking anti mosquito precautions. At this news every single bite on my body immediately started itching again (there are 7 of them in case you are curious)

Once he got off the phone with the health dept, Anthony called the Vet Clinic to see what else they could tell us. I wanted him to ask why the hell they didn’t call us like they promised, but he is much less rude than I in situations like this. The vet told him the birds had been transferred to Blue Mountain Wildlife in Oregon and gave us the contact info. It was too late tonight so he will call there in the morning. In the mean time she told us about their website so we could read the updates that were posted so far.

Since I’m sure no one else is obsessed with Jack enough to pick through the whole journal, I’ve just copied all the parts that relate to our birds:

6/25/09 Two fledgling Swainson's Hawks, probably siblings, were admitted today. They are quite ill, more so than their very thin condition should explain. One is able to stand with difficulty. He has been receiving treatment the past week at Sunrise Veterinary Clinic in Benton City. The other is very weak and dehydrated, and unable to stand. She was admitted to Sunrise Veterinary Clinic two days ago.
We were successful in placing an intravenous catheter in the first bird and starting our emaciation protocol. The bird is unable to tolerate solid food, so will receive only intravenous nourishment initially. We were unsuccessful in placing a catheter in the second bird due to her dehydrated condition. We will attempt to rehydrate with subcutaneous and oral fluids.

I’m guessing that captivity doesn’t suit Jack, because he was standing and walking just fine when we first brought him in. He also had managed to kill and eat a bird on his own (crazy cannibal!) The second bird was very bad off however.

6/28/09 We have been treating the two young Swainson's Hawks from Benton City since Thursday. The more debilitated one died this evening. The other bird is progressing well, is much more alert and able to tolerate small amounts of oral electrolytes. His primary nutrition continues to be intravenous nutrition.

RIP Baby No Name bird. Part of me is very glad I didn’t give in to the urge to name him Ianto *sighs*

7/17/09 We received notice today that a Red-tailed Hawk from Prosser, admitted June 25, is positive for West Nile Virus. The bird seems to be doing well, but will not eat on his own.

Which is the reason the health dept called (also, apparently they are now debating what kind of hawk Jack is again.)

But did you catch the important part of this post?
JACK HAS WEST NILE!!!
West Nile? Yeah. It’s at my house.
Holy freakin hell I’m never going out into nature again.

And if we are going to giggle all the way to hell about this, it's only fair to catch our busmates up on the joke. I'm not sure how we could do that without seeming insane(r)

I don't think that makes it more sane. I think that just shows off the crazy.

But does it show how cute and charming and harmless we are? Because you need to get my good side.
