Title: The Importance of Helmets in Child Care
Character(s): Jack/Ianto, OCs Henry and Sarah (once again borrowed from the ever generous
tardistenantsue )
Rating: PG
Spoilers: None
Notes: Just another bit of silly. In case you haven’t been following Year of the Cat (And why not?!) let me introduce Henry. He would be the little boy that Ianto and Jack have been charged with taking care of for the last little while due to some…unfortunate circumstances.
tardistenantsue has been kind enough to let me borrow her people again, including what we found out about Jack‘s babysitting skills here. I promise to stop stealing her people away eventually. Honest. After a craptastic last couple days I thought some silly happy fic wouldn’t be a bad idea, hope you like it.
“Not at all…Glad you called to check…” Ianto balanced the phone on his shoulder as he checked the time “I can’t imagine either…You have no idea.” He laughed “Yes, of course. See you then!”
Jack walked in as Ianto was hanging up the phone “Who are we going to see? Are we going somewhere?” He asked as Ianto stooped down to welcome Henry back home.
Ianto looked back up at Jack, momentarily confused. “Going somewhere? What? Oh that…No I was just catching up with someone…How did it go today? Did my boys have fun?”
He turned to check out Henry, who had apparently acquired a new look during the afternoon out. The small boy was now sporting a long coat that looked suspiciously like Jack’s, only it was so long Henry would have tripped if he attempted running or any quick movement. Completing the outfit was a black ball cap with an archiving sticker attached to the front declaring that Henry was ‘Property of Torchwood’ and ‘Top Secret‘. Ianto tweaked the bill of the cap, making Henry emit a little squeak. Looking back to Jack, he noted quizzically “Do a little shopping?”
“Well, you see, I decided that if he was going to be part of the team we needed to develop the boy’s ‘look’. Do you like it?” Jack looked down at Henry with a gleam in his eye. “Show him what the coat does Kid”
“Swish Swish Swish” Henry said, smiling as he moved from side to side making the coat swirl. Mid-twirl he caught the edge of the coat under his shoe and fell with a crash and a cry, the table edge knocking the hat off of his head.
Ianto rushed to his side and tried to soothe him. Frowning at the band-aids attached to the side of Henry’s head, he was at least relived to see that the child was not currently bleeding. He pulled the jacket, which he had to admit looked cute, off the child noting a few scrapes on his elbows. As soon as Henry saw the candy that Ianto pulled out of his pocket he instantly stopped crying and grabbed for it, then ran off to play with his toys. “Don’t forget to take off the wrapper this time!” Ianto called after him with a smile. A smile that dropped the second he turned his attention to Jack. “So, what happened to his head Jack?”
“His head? What do you mean? You just saw him fall…” Jack pointed vaguely in the direction of the offending table. “Sorry about that. They didn’t have a smaller size in the coat, but I couldn’t *not* buy it. I didn’t think he would hurt himself, honest. Maybe you could hem it up for us?” Jack took the coat, holding it up and looking at the bottom. He was trying hard to distract Ianto.
“His head” Ianto was not so easily distracted by the other man’s fast talking and flailing gestures.
“I don’t think he hit it that hard, I’m sure it will be fine. He fell, but jumped back up. You saw.”
“His. Head. Jack. When did he hurt his head?”
Jacked smiled nervously “Just now?”
“Jack.”
“Yes, Ianto?”
“Are you trying to tell me he hurt his head, just now, and that three band-aids magically appeared before I could even make it over to pick him up?”
Jack looked as if he was seriously considering trying to fabricate a story claiming that very thing was possible, but then he saw the look on Ianto’s face. Oh yes. The Look. He knew he might as well come clean. “Well, we were at the park and the boy was watching some of the older kids play…”
“Did one of them do that to his head?!” Ianto was suddenly even more riled, and wondering if that last minute phone call from Sarah the park mom hadn’t given him all the details of what happened.
“Well not exactly…we were just watching them on their boards. The kid got a kick out of watching the tricks…”
“At the skate park?! Where I specifically asked you NOT to take him? Because he could get hurt!” Ianto was thoroughly riled up now. Sarah had the story right, this was Jack’s fault. Not some overly rough kid after all.
“Well, he just wanted to sit on a board…I didn’t think he would go down into the bowl thing…”
Ianto practically growled at Jack.
“It’s your fault he got hurt anyway!” Jack burst out, latching on to what he thought was his last hope of getting out of this on the winning side.
“MY FAULT!?!” Ianto somehow managed to yell without even raising his voice. He didn’t want to upset Henry again after all. The poor kid.
“You’re the one that wouldn’t let me put the helmet on him anymore!”
“In the house, the car, the store…doing things that don’t require helmets! And you shouldn’t have let him do anything that would require a helmet. Should I also add that I don’t want him wearing an air tank? And note that if you take him diving in the bay, which you better not, this is not an order to let him drown without an oxygen source.”
Jack attempted Ianto’s patented eye roll (with little success) as the other man continued.
“I also don’t want him to play with a ropes and cords, but if you decide to jump out a bridge with him, which I better never hear about, I hope you let him have the bungee cord…”
Ianto seemed to be gearing up for a long, involved, snarky tirade. Jack knew his only chance was to rely on his winning smile and hope Ianto’s sense of humor was still intact.
“Well you wouldn’t hear about that, I would never tell you! I would be crazy to let you find out!”
Ianto tried to stay mad, really tried. But he knew the argument had now become ridiculous and, after all, Henry was fine. Just a few scrapes. He gave up and smiled “Have you learned your lesson then Jack?”
“That you were wrong, and I should have kept putting the helmet on him?”
Jack attempted to duck as Ianto playfully swiped at him knocking both of them to the ground laughing. Henry heard them and joined in, catapulting himself nearly over the top. Luckily Ianto managed to catch him before his head hit the table again.
“See what I mean, Ianto? He needs the helmet!”
