Other Half’s work rented out an ice rink for company ‘family night’ tonight, so we went ice skating. It was the first time I’d been since 6th grade (I’m just now turned 41, do the math on how long ago that was and cry with me) I wasn’t great then, so I really didn’t know how I would do. He had never ice skating in his life, and was totally nervous even walking across the floor in skates.

I had a lot of fun, but (unfortunately) couldn’t convince him to go further than from one end of the box to the other. He claims he wants to try another day, when he isn’t surrounded by people that could pick on him everyday forever when he falls. We’ll see.

It went surprisingly well for me. Not going to lie - there was a moment when a small child turned and came towards me full speed in one of those pipe cage things, and I thought I was about to crash and burn. I briefly wondered if there was a way to sue a group of fictional characters for making me think skating was a thing I could do without dying. Luckily I managed to get out of the way (of her and her apologetic parent chasing behind) without falling, even being out of wall’s reach.

Of course halfway round the rink I lost it over absolutely nothing, and fell flat on my ass. But that was my only fall! And it wasn’t on top of a small child or anyone Other Half works with sooooo

Overall, I’m still going to call it a win.



He’s also failed at taking pics that aren’t from ridiculously far away or with a crowd of people in front, so you’ll have to accept this blurry pic as evidence I made it (I think this was like my 6th or 7th time around, because I had already lost the sweatshirt and stolen his vest instead. I got surprising hot out there!)

I used to rollerskate and rollerblade a lot in school but I tried ice skating once and had a lot of pain in the skates. There was a ridge down the middle of my foot. Could have just been crap hire skates.
I miss skating but I just worry about how much damage I could do these days. Things dislocate so much easier now.

Sounds like either bad skates or a completely wrong fit. That’s a shame, because the ones there that said they rollerbladed were really enjoying the ice. Last time I did that was probably 20 years or more ago - and involved lots of skinned up knees - so I’m not sure it helped me out much. But still, fun!
He was worried enough about his knee that he had his brace on. With your joints, that would be really worrying especially falling towards your hands :(

I'm sure they were bad skates. When I used to rollerblade I had my own pair. They were my brothers old pair that he grew out of. I loved them, they were purple and so comfy. But yeah. My brother dislocated his shoulder while ice skating about 15 years ago and I'd be worried I'd do the same. And right now I'd worry about my neck until they can fix that. I'm less likely to break something because stuff stretches and gives at my joints instead of snapping but that doesn't mean it doesn't do damage.

We have ice skating rinks left bu they seem to get rid go the all the skating rinks. Don't know why. Guess people weren't using them any more. I used to really enjoy it in school but haven't been since so it's not like I was going.

We have a Junior Hockey team about a half hour from us, and this is their practice rink. Between that and a few other groups that rent the rink, the open skate days are limited, but looking st the schedule there are a couple days a week at least.

There’s a roller rink in our town, a few years ago we went for a kid’s bday party there they had a bunch of strobe lights going. They said they were tied into the ‘light show’ and couldn’t turn them off. Left after a half hour with a migraine and didn’t go back.
