There are some states that won't let you have hedgies as pets, but luckily we are allowed here.
I had wanted either bearded dragon or gecko (I was torn) for a while, but with rlbf being seriously freaked over any kind of lizard it didn't seem fair. I still visit them at the pet store though, and then I get the cuteness without the cleanup.
Henrietta is a climber! Her favorite things are this big crinkle tube, it's made for ferrets so she shouldn't outgrow it. There's holes at the ends and on on the top/side, and she spends a lot of time going over, under and through it.
Look at her stretch!
There's also a cardboard box I that tub for her to climb on and under. Plus the giant bucket wheel RLBF made her with instructions we found on one of the Hedgie forums. She doesn't mess with it during the day, but I see the evidence of her using at night when I clean it every morning!
In the other tub (she has a PVC pipe between) she has her "igloo" for sleeping, food and water, and her little toys. She pushes around a mini tennis ball toy and climbs (more climbing!) on this squishy cushion we got her.
Outside of her home she mostly likes to run up and down arms so fast you're sure she'll fall off or snuggle in laps inside of her little fleece sack.
