Project: Hot Mess

Only having two more gifts that needed knit sounded so damn easy...until I actually looked at the calendar and realized I was down to two weeks.

Most of the time I’m okay with not being the fastest knitter. Enjoy the process and all that jazz. But when it comes to a time crunch, I really wish I was one of those super speedy knitters that can crank out a project in a couple days. Alas, I am not.

If I can finish this gift by the end of the weekend though, I should be back on track for an early finish -



About 50 rows left before the main part of this project is finished. After that about another 30 (much shorter) rows. Any guesses about what this hot mess will become?

(I’m almost resenting the five hours (5?!?) I’ll be spending at Other Half’s work party tonight. I was already not really looking forward to it, now I’m thinking about all that lost knitting time too)

Edit: Is it mean to ask for guesses, when I’m pretty sure no one could? I am just really enjoying this part, since I’m missing out of the surprising the giftee part because I let her choose it!

My guess is a cowl. I suck at picking cool color combos so I'm just in awe of how you put the colors together!

Nope, not a cowl.
And thanks but I can’t take credit for the color choices - they were a combo of the originals used in the pattern and what the giftee had wanted. I’m much more boring, and planning on a reknit for myself in neutral colors later on :D

A sweater? Awesome effect! I thought it was entrelac at first - intarsia?

Nope, not a sweater.
It is a cool technique, way simpler than it looks. Picking up the middle bars of stitches below every 10ish rows, and only knitting with one color at a time.
Entrelac is on my to-try list!

I have a time crunch, too - to my delight and astonishment my nephew (and niece) likes me to knit him sweaters, and I'm doing one for Christmas, but, ack, I've done the body up to the armpits, and am working on the sleeves (both at once, which helps) and then I have to join them up and yoke them together and then go back and see about maybe cuffs and ribbing round the bottom and, and, eek. It's a basic seamless sweater (with a little bit of embellishment, or I'd be too bored to work at it) from Elizabeth Zimmerman's recipe, but there is quite a lot of my nephew and not much time.

I think it’s a hugely under-appreciated pattern. I love trying out new designers when they have unique tequniques like this.

The baby surprise cardi was designed by Elizabeth Zimmermann, right? I remember making one of those and being in complete disbelief that it was going to “work” almost the whole time I was knitting it. Very cool construction technique!
I hope you manage to finish on time!!
